For those who are obese or overweight, you are more likely to get sleep apnea disorder. Yet, people with slim body also has the possibility to this sleep apnea disorder. The common risk factors of sleep apnea are including:

  • Extra weight. For those who have overweight body with 25 or higher BMI or obese with 30 or higher BMI, you will have higher risk of sleep apnea.
  • Large size of neck. For men who have 17 inch or larger neck size or women with 16 inches or larger neck size, the sleep apnea risk factor will be higher. The larger size of neck has softer tissue, which can block the airway throughout sleep.
  • Middle age. The most common sleep apnea disorders occur in patients who are in middle age or adulthood. However, it also possible occurs in any age.
  • Male gender. The sleep disorder is also more commonly suffered by men rather than women. Meanwhile in women, the risk will be higher when she has been menopause.     
  • Hypertension. Most people who have sleep apnea commonly also suffer high blood pressure.
  • Family History. The sleep disorder of apnea is also commonly a heritable condition. It means that a higher risk will be had by those who have parents with sleep apnea. Those who inherit obesity from the parents will also have higher risks of sleep apnea. The other factors like eating habits and physical activity may also become the factors.

When someone witnesses you snoring loudly while sleep and you feel the symptoms and signs above, it may be a great idea to see a doctor and get some medical checkups.
